Remaining Calm

Remaining Calm

What is the reason for getting angry with someone? Instead of remaining calm under pressure. You see people lose their anger all the time with complete strangers. Why? Too often we let our emotions take control when we are in a hurry or we may have experienced something disturbing earlier that day. So, rather than remaining calm, we let our anger go.

I recently observed someone at the hospital angered because he wasn’t being heard. The receptionist kept talking over him, this is not possible we don’t ever bill this service to insurance. Yada yada yada. The man knew he was not going to change this reluctant gatekeeper to let him have the test done.

Finally, he says to her, look at the notes I spoke to someone in billing. She conceded by calling her manager and more of this procedure must be paid in advance. Still not allowing the man to be heard. That was enough, he wanted to be heard and told them both he had enough of them not listening. By then he was angry and kept raising his voice so everyone could hear.

The manager proceeded behind the desk to look at the patient’s notes, and nothing said by billing. So, the man called the number he was given and to no surprise the receptionist on the other end was no more help than these ladies at the hospital.

It seemed the man started to calm down, and the two ladies began to believe the man. The manager told the receptionist to let him go and made a sly remark; this should be in the notes.

Nonetheless the man apologized and thanked them. He proceeded to sit back down until he was called back for his test. But it wasn’t without having feeling guilt and shame for losing his temper and allowing his anger to get the best of him. Instead of remaining calm.

I gather this from the phone call he made. Yes, I was listening in on his conversation, just couldn’t help myself. However, I understand very well, being in similar situations and my anger gets the best of me.

Remaining Calm

It’s nice to be heard, recognized, and respected. Easier said when you remain calm under pressure. Sometimes it happens so fast we get ourselves into a fight or flight situation. This does not help my friend.

Be patient with others, demonstrate kindness and exemplify love for humanity. No one is perfect. I have been down that path before and in the end, I always regret my actions when my anger gets the best of me. I aspire to remain calm under pressure and hope you do too.

Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.  Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you have a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues, put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. Colossians 3:12-14 (NIV)

Pray with me; Father in heaven, thank you for patience in teaching us to remain calm under pressure. To extend your kindness and love unto others even when we get angry. Help us to forgive others even when its hard to do so. Let us remember to call upon you when faced with difficult situations and remain calm. In Jesus name, Amen…
